What Experts Say I. - A new reality for beauty standards: How selfies and filters affect body image

According to a Boston Medical Center (2018), as the level of emphasis on appearance increased because of the switch from magazines and newspapers to social media, the perception and norms of beauty changed. Prioritizing appearance over other features can make a lot of harm to a person´s self-esteem and can trigger other mental health diseases such as eating disorders or body dysmorphia. According to their studies, young teens who edited their images were more concerned about their body image, and those with dysmorphic body image seek validation on social media. Additional data claims that 55 percent of cosmetic surgeons visit patients who wish to improve their selfie appearance. Surgery, according to Boston Medical Center experts, is not the best option in these circumstances because it will not improve the underlying BDD and may even worsen it. They promote psychosocial therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and help from specialists in psychology fields.
